02Gili Islands

Gili Surf Experience

Surf in Paradise

Experience surfing in a completely different setting — surrounded by the tropical beauty of the Gili Islands.

Surfing around the Gilis is a condition-dependent experience. The islands are generally protected by reefs and are not a major consistent surf destination, but certain breaks around Gili Trawangan and Gili Air can become rideable when the swell, tide and wind align.

For surfers who want something different, catching a wave with the turquoise waters and tropical island scenery of the Gilis in the background can be a memorable experience.

Highlights

  • Gili Trawangan surf experience
  • Gili Air surf experience
  • Reef-break environment
  • Beautiful clear water
  • Less crowded when conditions are right
  • Local guidance recommended

Best For

Getting there

Boats, private cars, and beach pickups

Selong Belanak

Selong Belanak is on the southwest coast. GiliMove already lists this private-car route from Bangsal and Senggigi — search it or ask on WhatsApp for a hotel pickup timed with your lesson.

Gili Islands

Surf from Gili Trawangan or Gili Air when conditions allow. Reach the islands by boat with GiliMove, then we confirm whether a session is on before you paddle out.

Mawi Beach

Mawi is on the south coast, west of Kuta Lombok. GiliMove arranges a private car from Bangsal or Senggigi via Kuta so you can time the session with the swell.

FAQ

Before you paddle out

Do I need previous surfing experience?
Not necessarily. Selong Belanak is the recommended option for first-time and beginner surfers.
Which location is best for beginners?
Selong Belanak is the strongest choice for beginners because of its sandy bottom and generally more forgiving beach-break conditions.
Can beginners surf at Mawi?
We do not recommend Mawi for first-time beginners. Its reef break and stronger wave characteristics are better suited to surfers with appropriate experience.
Can I surf at the Gili Islands every day?
No. Surfing around the Gilis is dependent on swell, wind and tide. The conditions can be inconsistent, so a surf session cannot be guaranteed every day.
Do you provide surfboards?
Board availability depends on the selected surfing package. Details will be shown when booking.
Can I request a specific surf location?
You can request your preferred location, but the final location should be determined according to your surfing ability and current sea conditions.
